Another one bites the dust

We hear today that the last dictator (with God on his side) of the 60s has been killed. From the video I watched of his last moments it would appear that it was not a dignified death, that's a shame, it denies all those families who suffered under him a chance for their story to be told in a court of law and to participate in a justice process, however it was an understandable conclusion to 40 years of tyranny. As for the other bloke in this photo, he has God on his side too, I can't help but think it means as just much in his case as it did in Gaddaffi's.

Would agree that "it means just as much" to both of them. Both were still fundamentally secular rulers though, whoever they called in as backup.

AE, I was really aiming this post at the hypocrisy of the individuals but since you mention their political landscapes. I think it would be fair to say that you and I may have a different definition of "secular". I agree some elements of their governments were secular others weren't, for example I still believe that we (UK) don't live in a properly secular society, it's certainly more secular than Libya was but there are still concessions to what I would call superstition camouflaged as tradition.

To be honest it's hard to say what Gaddafi was, he was a Pan-African, Arabist, "Socialist" - you're right in that he then went on to impose some strict Islamic rules.

Blair - "we don't do God".

You're right on the hypocrisy of course.
